Hey readers! πŸ™‚

As the title says, I am going to talk about my big fat South Indian wedding and all it’s tiny details.

I am so excited as I will rejoice the whole experience once again while penning it here. I have included my pictures to show how I decked up for my day: the costume, the jewelry and the makeup/hairdo.

My wedding happened on February 05,2018 from 6:00AM to 7:30 AM in the morning. The holy placeΒ Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam was the location that our parents chose (146 miles away from my hometown).

This is how I looked that morning. During the prep for the whole event (two months of it) I decided I am nothing if not traditional. This is how a typical South Indian bride would dress for her day.

How I got the whole look:

I wore a ‘kanjeevaram’ silk saree in brownish-crimson color from VaraMahalakshmi Stores located in Kanchipuram. It’s a custom that parents-in-law of the bride choose her the wedding saree (mostly people go for red or shades of red).😊

It is traditional to wear Kemp jewelry on the wedding day. The first time I ever wore a nose pin. Jewelry looked gorgeous with my saree. 😍

As for my ‘something borrowed’, I used my best friend’s jumka (earrings). Loved it.

About my bangles, it’s a custom where the bride has to wear green and red bangles mixed. I was all in for that traditional way.

I got Henna designs two days earlier to the day (both hands and legs). The big finger rings totally complemented to the look.

Makeup and hair was done by a professional makeup artist and she had done a good job. I decided to go for a subtle brown-gold Smokey eyes and red lips to match my Saree and bindi. I chose the traditional braid with flowers for my hairdo πŸ€—

The ceremony

We ( bride and the groom) were supposed to be ready by 6AM in the morning. Like always I was late, showed up at 6:45AM. Our priest had already finished some of the rituals with just our parents.

We had an interesting ritual called the ‘Kaasi yaathirai’ which directly translates as ‘Journey to Kaasi’. In this ritual, the groom pretends to leave to Kaasi (the holy place) instead of marrying the bride. The bride’s father convinces the groom and brings him back to get him married to his daughter. Yes, my dad managed to bring him back. πŸ˜›

We all had some laughs. It was all very very cute!😘

In Hindu wedding, we do not write any vows. The priest says the basic wedding vows out loud and ask the bride and groom if they agree to it. That is how we take the wedding vows.

Then, we moved on to the main part of the wedding.

Tying the knot

We don’t do rings for our wedding. We have a sacred yellow thread with ‘mangalsutra’ called as Thaali. The groom is supposed to tie the ‘thaali’ around the bride’s neck (Just like putting on the wedding rings, this is what Hindus do).

Here’s a closer picture of my husband tying the thaali around my neck.😍

Then the usual photo poses, for instance, garland-exchanging pose. One of my favorites from that morning.😍

When I said we don’t do rings in our wedding, I was actually wrong. Yup. The groom puts a ring on the bride’s toes called as Metti. It has many scientific reasons for this tradition. The nerve in the second finger runs through the uterus and the heart. Wearing a ring would maintain balance in the uterus. And also helps in maintaining fertility and reproductive health.

Finally, we play games. Yayy. 😁🀩

It’s just not a tradition. We actually declare winners and the ‘winner’ is believed to be the alpha in the relationship.

One of my favorite game was, we throw our engagement ring into the big silverware like the picture and the one who finds it first is the winner. We get three chances. I don’t want to say who won.

Just kidding. Of course, it’s me. 😁

Nevertheless, we had an endless photo session before we ended that day. We returned to my hometown (Pondicherry, India) that night and started calling ourselves happily married.

Weddings happen once you find the right person, it’s also about you, how you feel when you look back on the day as you made the life’s most important decision and how certain you felt about the man who took the wedding vows with you and how happy you felt to become that Mrs.Someone.

It was by far the sweetest day of my life because that was the first day for the rest of my life. ❀️
